Chuck Swaggerty and Jason Morgan were one of six couples who were parties to a court case leading to the April 2 Iowa Supreme Court ruling that made same-sex marriage legal in the state. They believe they were among the first same-sex couples to marry in the state, journeying a county north to be married shortly after 8 a.m. April 27 in the Plymouth County Courthouse in Le Mars.

Last Saturday, we loaded up the family and drove over to Lynches River County Park for the Fall Frenzy Festival. I want to commend the organizers of the event for an amazing job! Everything, other than food, was absolutely free…and who doesn’t like free entertainment? We listened to a local elementary school chorus and watched a dance school perform before the kids realized there was a hayride about to leave.

Two climate activists were arrested in Brisbane, Australia yesterday for shackling themselves to a coal conveyor belt and briefly halting the loading of coal onto a Taiwanese vessel. Meanwhile 16 kayakers attempted to block the ship before being escorted away by four police boats. Four climate activists chained themselves across a haul road on a strip mining site in Kanawha County, West Virginia yesterday to protest mountaintop removal mining.

Almost 20 percent of all emergency room visits in Alabama are patients suffering from flu-like symptoms, and health officials are reporting a high number of cases in Florida.
